HEAL YOUR GUT: HEAL YOUR BRAIN

HEAL YOUR GUT: HEAL YOUR BRAIN
Scientists are now finding that the key to brain health and the prevention and healing of diseases and conditions affecting the brain like Alzheimer’s, Autism, ADHD, Parkinson’s, Depression, Anxiety and Insomnia lies in the health of the gut that has now been recognized as The  Second Brain.
The gut is now known as the second brain not only because it is extremely rich in nerves but because it is home to bacteria, both good and bad, ten times the number of cells that make up your entire body, that produce chemicals directly affecting brain function and impacting the metabolism of the entire body in a profound way. Ninety per cent of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut.
Also, some 70 to 80 per cent of the body’s immune system is made up of cells to be found in the gut and this immune system is also powerfully impacted by the bacteria population in the gut and elsewhere in the body.
The 100 trillion bacteria in the gut contribute over 99% of the DNA in the body and thereby play a prominent role in its overall function.

The gut bacteria are made up of both harmful bacteria as well as those bacteria that promote health and are called probiotics. Pro means: for and bio means: life. So probiotics means for life.

Science is finding that the right quantity and balance of probiotics in the gut is a of pillar of health that has now been implicated not only diseases and conditions of the brain mentioned above but also in cancer, chronic fatigue, obesity, diabetes, bowel dysfunctions, and vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
It is important therefore to feed, preserve and cultivate our gut’s probiotic population so that they may, in turn, keep the entire body healthy.
Our body’s probiotics feed on what we eat. Certain foods are good for them as they give these good bacteria what they particularly need: fructooligosaccharides, inulin and arabinogalactan. These substances are called pre-biotics because probiotics need them to feed on. They are found in onions, garlic, leeks, and artichoke, among other foods which should be consumed for this purpose.
Other ways of strengthening our probiotic population is by taking food that already contains them such as fermented foods e.g. fermented yoghurt, sauerkraut, miso soup, soft cheese and fermented vegetable.
In addition, there are on the market very many probiotic products that supply a wide range of probiotics that can offer a full spectrum of beneficial health impact and which should be consumed regularly.
Other measures that we need take to conserve and strengthen our probiotic population include:
Avoiding or minimizing antibiotic use, having natural birth rather than caesarian section if possible, adequate breastfeeding, managing our stress well, reducing sugar, carbohydrates and artificial sweeteners as well as eating a fibre-rich diet and generally maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Lastly, the colon, in particular, must be kept healthy. Apart from the high-fibre diet mentioned already, drinking plenty of water, having regular bowel movements, and undergoing cleansing of the colon with colonic irrigation has been known to have a powerfully rejuvenating impact on total body health.
